Lonely Trail Of Dreams

© 2007 David Bates

Verse I:
Gazing out at the starry sky, from his hardened bed of brown,
A cowboy lies there wondering, if he’ll ever settle down.
Tired of long days in the saddle on the trail,
This young man’s life of freedom now seems an old man’s jail.

Chorus:
Out on the trail, the lonely trail of dreams,
Content and at peace, so it seems.
But inside his aching heart, he longs to find,
A lasting love, and to end his ride,
Out on the lonely trail of dreams.

Verse II:
He’s got this dream of having a little place of his own,
Though he has no desire to live his dream alone.
A place in a valley, to share with his bride,
A few head, a couple horses, and a boy he can teach to ride.

Repeat Chorus.

Verse III:
He searches each trail town, every dance hall and saloon,
But only ends up broke and empty, drunk and howling at the moon.
With aching head and heart, he returns to the drive,
With the dream that’s giving him the strength to survive.

Repeat Chorus.
